From Hamburg via Emden and Portsmouth to Vigo

In the meantime, Markus has arrived in Vigo.

Markus with SY Montana, Swan 48 on Helgoland

The route took him from Hamburg first to Helgoland and then to Emden. There, the crew was changed. From Emden, the Montana first sailed along the Dutch coast towards Ijmuiden near Amsterdam. On the way there was a small breakdown with the engine. From now on, there was no more propulsion, although the engine was still running. After a short error analysis, Markus found that the flange of the newly installed thrust bearing on the gearbox had loosened so much that it had finally come off completely and the power was no longer transmitted to the further shaft. Unfortunately, the cardan was slightly damaged in the process. Thanks to the good support of our Hamburg shipyard, however, this was repaired in Ijmulden within two days and we hope that this will remain an isolated case.

After that, we had a rather exhausting trip in westerly winds across the southern North Sea to Dover. After another stopover in Brighton, we finally reached the Solent. Here we made the obligatory visit to Cowes and an overnight stay in Yarmouth before the trip ended in Portsmouth.

The next trip started from Portsmouth, first through the Solent to the west for another overnight stay in Yarmouth. The next day we passed the Needles and sailed along the English south coast to Falmouth. A good weather window for crossing the Bay of Biscay opened up straight away, so we didn't have to wait long and were able to continue sailing straight away, past Brest and across the Bay of Biscay to Muros in Galicia. This left enough time for five more stops in Galicia before the trip ended in Vigo.
